~2. WHAT IS VOCABULARY MODERN?
This is a program which aids the user in learning more advanced
vocabulary words with the benefit of a graphical user interface. The words in
the program's database are typically seen on college entrance tests such as
the GRE and the SAT. Using this program is an excellent tool to refresh and
reinforce your vocabulary if you are planning on taking such a test. You don't
have to be a prospective college student, because this program helps any user
learn to communicate and comprehend more intelligently. You will be able to
target words you are having difficulty with and expose yourself to almost 4000
advanced vocabulary words.
~3. HARDWARE AND OPERATING SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
W95: Windows 95 and Windows NT.
OS2: OS/2 2.1 and above.
W31: Windows 3.1 with the Win32s extension package installed.
~3A. INSTALLING THE WIN32S PACKAGE FOR WINDOWS 3.1
Obtain the Microsoft Win32s 1.30 enhancement to upgrade
Windows 3.1. This can be found at the following URL:
http://www.mcs.net/~bvonmoss/vomod/win32s13.zip
or may be found in another form at ftp://ftp.microsoft.com
Unzip win32s13.zip into a temporary directory. Retain the directory
structure. (Do not install Win32s on Windows 95.)
UNZIP win32s13
or
PKUNZIP -d win32s13
CD DISK1
SETUP.EXE
{ reboot the computer }
{ verify that win32s is functional by running Freecell which
comes with this package. }
~4. INSTALLATION
~4A. INSTALLATION COMMANDS
CD \
MD VOMOD
UNZIP \TMPDIR\VOMOD103.ZIP
OS2: VOMOD.EXE
W95: VMODW.EXE
W31: VMOD3.EXE
W31: { VMOD3.EXE cannot be called from a DOS prompt, but must be
called by selecting "Run" from the "File" pulldown. }
~4B. INSTALLATION WITH EXPLANATION
Make a directory for the program:
CD \
MD VOMOD
Unzip the file with unzip.exe (at ftp.uu.net) or PKUNZIP.EXE
UNZIP \TMPDIR\VOMOD103.ZIP
Make sure any .DLL files, such as VMODATW1.DLL, will be recognized by
the program.
OS2: The directory it resides in must be in the LIBPATH= statement in
CONFIG.SYS, unless it is in the same directory as the executable. You may want
to install this program on the desktop. In this case, drag an icon from the
Templates folder, named "Program" to where you want it to reside and then
change the Settings to VOMOD.EXE .
WIN: The directory it resides in must be in the PATH= statement in CONFIG.SYS,
unless it is in the same directory as the executable. You may want to install
this program on the taskbar. Install this program on the taskbar by opening
the "My Computer" folder, then open the drive folder where VMODW.EXE is
located. Drag VMODW.EXE over the Start button. This can be removed from the
taskbar or put in the Programs folder by select-ing Settings on the taskbar
and managing the taskbar.
~5. GETTING THE MOST OUT OF VOCABULARY MODERN
After passing the copyright screen, the main screen is displayed with
several choices. In the main body of the window are 53 word ranges. Select one
word range with which to work with. When you master that range, then you can
move on to another word range.
When you have established which word range you are working with, it's
a good idea to become familiar with the 75 words in that word range by
selecting the Word-List menubar choice. For each of the words a typical usage
is given (N.:noun, V.:verb, etc.), a basic definition, and the word in the
context of a sentence. These are not comprehensive, but only used as a study
guide. Consult a dictionary for more concise meanings or the different uses of
a word. Less common usages of words or obvious elementary meanings may be left
out.
After studying the word list, the next step is to drill yourself. You
can either guess words or guess definitions. When answering, your answer may
be a correct variation or worded differently. In these cases it is up to you
to decide whether or not your answer is correct. If you get words Incorrect,
they will come up again every 15 words. If you get all the words correct after
75 tries, it will notify you that you have mastered that word range. The final
step is to take the Test, which is composed of 15 antonym questions. The
results will be tabulated in your Score.
Summary:
1. choose a word range to work with
2. study the word list of that word range
{ consult a dictionary for concise meanings or
pronunciations. }
3. drill the words in that word range
{ you are the final judge if a word or definition is
correct or incorrect. }
4. test yourself on that word range
5. go to step 1
Get Help by hitting F1 at any time.
~6. OTHER FUNCTIONS
~6A. COMMAND LINE OPTION
Specify a different user at the command prompt with the /u
option. However, the program will remember who the last user was.
There should be no space after /u. Names with spaces are allowed, but
must be put in quotation marks. /U , -u , -U are the equivalent as /u
Examples:
VMODW
VMODW /uWinston
VMODW -U"Henry Clay"
{ Remember that the Win32s version VMOD3.EXE cannot be called from a
DOS prompt, but must be called by selecting "Run" from the "File" pull
down. }
~6B. CHEAT MODE
When selected, during tests, you have a chance to see the
answer as provided by a push button on a notebook test page.
~6C. TABULATE RESULTS
When on by default, scores on tests are added to the user
score.
~6D. USER
Select 'User' menubar choice to change the current user or
delete a user or reset the user's scores.
~7. DEREGISTER THE PROGRAM FROM THE WINDOWS REGISTRY
WIN: In the course of using the program it will put entries in the Windows
"registry". If you want to deregister the program and eliminate any entries
created, run VMDEREG.EXE . It can be run from the command line.
